Difference between Mbps and MBps. Why pen drives show less memory than printed? (explained)

Mbps means megabits per second. Mb is used for download and upload speed. So remember when you have an internet connection of 8Mbps you are not downloading a file 8MB per second. You are actually downloading the file at 1MB per second.
MBps stands for megabytes per second. MB is used for file size.

Why does a pen drive or hard disc show less memory capacity than printed?
Most of us often think why we get less memory capacity in pen drives or hard disc. There are three reasons

  • It depends on operating system (OS) how it treat your disc. There are differences file formats and algorithms used by different operating systems.
  • A portion of memory space in your external storage is reserved for system files and data sector for better performance.
  • By default your pen drive is on NTFS format and some space is required for memory allocation.
  • The main cause of the difference between what is printed and what actually displayed n the computer is the calculation method used by disc manufacturing companies. Our computer understand binary system not decimal systen. For simplicity manufacturer use use 1GB= 1000*1000*1000 bytes rather than 1GiB=1024*1024*1024. In 1GB pen drive you actually get 1000000000 bytes instead of 1073741824 bytes.
